Chinatown Thoughts pt. 7
Another response to our survey:
What do you appreciate about Chinatown?
As a young, Chinese-American I like being so close to foods and amenities that are familiar and comfortable to me. Chinatown has those resources with its many restaurants, markets, shops + basic stores all within walking distance plus is still in close proximity to the thriving culture of downtown LA.
Some people think of Chinatown as just a tourist destination; don’t forget it’s also HOME.

Another response to our survey from Ctown resident:
How would you make Chinatown a better environment to live in? What would you change, what would you keep?
It’s hard to change the balance of what makes Chinatown unique + what makes it a place that people would want to live in….I want to live somewhere that’s not only reasonably priced and reasonably placed but that has enough life going on within walking distance that I’m not ashamed to say I live there without being judged.
Let’s not forget that behind all the skyscrapers, there are people LIVING here.

Another response to our survey from a local Ctown resident:
What businesses do you go to in Chinatown? Is it important to keep these businesses open? Why or why not?
Businesses that I often frequent include:
Sam Woo BBQ
Chinatown Bakery + Deli
Yum Cha Cafe
Full House Seafood
Kim Chuy
Ten Ren
Lollicup
Ai Hoa
Wing Hop Fung Ginseng
Hoan Kiem
Via Cafe
Pho 87
Gigo’s Cafe
Bank of America
Post Office
Each and every one of these has a different reason as to why I visit them, and thus it would take an essay to explain why I believe it’s important to keep them open.

Another response from our survey:
What businesses do you go to in Chinatown? Is it important to keep these businesses open? Why or why not?
i go almost everywhere in chinatown, from markets to the barber shop to the restaurants to the plaza. the list goes on. of course it’s important to keep these businesses open; they’re so convenient to get to since i do live here, and they’re all apart of my lifestyle. i would really miss all these businesses if it had to close down.
I mean in a way, aren’t we all making a fist? Another pic of how we’re prepping for June 30th!
George Yu and Wal-Mart Interests

By now, you should of read the news about “Zoe” or Stephanie Harnett, the infamous Wal-Mart consultant that lied about her identity in order to infiltrate a workers’ organization. If not, links are below.
During a press conference we participated in earlier this week, Stephanie Harnett passed out her business card and shepherded media across the street for a counter-press conference hosted by George Yu. Is that the type of people you consort with, George?
Ironically, as George Yu complains about special interests trying to ruin Chinatown, he himself is herded from media event to media event and seen meeting with Wal-Mart consultants. George continues to dish out accusations that our campaign to stop Wal-Mart is made up of special interests. Did we miss something when Wal-Mart, with its fleet of lobbyists and bribery scandals, isn’t a special interest? Don’t pretend that your supporters, which include outsiders like Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, don’t represent specific business interests that do not take into account everyone in our community.
Finally, George, you don’t live in Chinatown either. And your interests are extremely narrow and do not include the entire Chinatown business community which you purportedly represent.
We cannot continue to turn a blind eye when George Yu continues lashing out at us. Our group includes people who are life-long residents of Chinatown such as Tanira Chau, Vicki Lau or David Lee.
George, we are tired of your antics.
